Black Star Pastry, Newtown

There’s been a lot of fuss made about Black Star Pastry, but I haven’t had a chance to head over and try its legendary Strawberry, Watermelon and Rose Cream Cake until recently. It seems that the masses are still loving this patisserie, because when we arrived at 2pm on a public holiday, we found quite a queue ahead of us which was a worry as we only had an hour before the bakery closed. Luckily, the line moved quite quickly and soon enough we were inside the tiny shop itself, gawking at all the different pastry creations on offer.

The boy decided to try a Lamb Shank and Red Wine pie to start. It has a chunky, hearty filling encased within a buttery and flaky pastry. He gave it his seal of approval, but I was far more interested in the gorgeous sweet treats that were on the plate next to it.

For the sweets, we chose a Raspberry Creme Brulee Tart and the Strawberry, Watermelon and Rose Cream Cake. The Creme Brulee Tart had a much thicker layer of caramelised burnt sugar on top than the Bourke Street Bakery ones and took a bit of force to crack it open. The creamy innards had sweet and tart ribbons of raspberry woven throughout it and it was absolutely delicious. The delectable innards were complemented by the solid tart base with its rich, buttery flavour and crumbly texture, but I found the burnt sugar shards were thicker than I liked.

The highlight of the three baked goods we had picked was the Strawberry, Watermelon and Rose Cream Cake, without a doubt. Apart from its pretty presentation with flower petals scattered on top of layer upon layer of cream, cake and watermelon, it tasted heavenly. Although I had expected it to be quite rich due to all the cream, it was surprisingly light and had lovely floral notes which melded beautifully with the strawberries and the refreshing layer of fresh watermelon. I can see what everyone’s been raving about. I was keen to get another slice, but such is the popularity of the cake that it had already sold out when we went back for seconds!

Blackstar Pastry is well worth the wait if you find yourself confronted with a long queue as we did. Although it looks like there’s hardly any seating, most people take away and we were able to nab a seat inside using the concrete slabs as tables. The lesson learnt here is to get in early and buy up as many slices of the signature Strawberry, Watermelon and Rose Cream Cake as you can before they sell out!
